Biography

Born in Rome, Adriana Morelli received her degree in singing from the “F. Cilea” Conservatory, Reggio Calabria, and completed her studies with Maestro Walter Cataldi Tassoni.

Although her artistic training is in music, her stage career started in drama performances, in various theater productions.

After returning to music, in 1978 she came first in the young artist’ competition for opera singers held by the Teatro Lirico Sperimentale, Spoleto. That year she launched her career as professional singer in her debut performance in La bohème at the Teatro Nuovo, Spoleto.

She went on to win numerous awards and was voted best singer in the competitions Achille Peri (Teatro Municipale, Reggio Emilia), Maria Callas (Rai), Voci pucciniane (Teatro del Giglio, Lucca).

Her successful career grew with memorable performances in major opera theatres throughout Italy: Teatro alla Scala (Milan), Teatro Petruzzelli (Bari), Teatro Regio (Parma), Teatro Donizetti (Bergamo), Teatro Verdi (Trieste), Festival dei Due Mondi (Spoleto), Terme di Caracalla for Teatro dell’Opera (Rome), Teatro Regio (Turin), Arena and Teatro filarmonico (Verona), Teatro Comunale (Florence), Teatro Massimo (Palermo) and in Torre del Lago for the Puccini Festival, in Genoa, in Bologna, in Naples, in Catania.

She has also sung in important roles from the Italian opera repertoire in major theatres around the world: Cologne (Oper der Stadt), Toulouse (Théâtre du Capitole), Lausanne (Théâtre Municipal), Hamburg (Staastoper), Vienna (Staatsoper), Melbourne (Victoria State Opera), New York (Lincoln Center), Washington (Kennedy Center).

During her career, she has worked under the baton of some of the most famous conductor:  Herbert von Karajan, Zubin Mehta, Jean Claude Casdesus, Lorin Maazel, Spiros Argiris, Bruno Bartoletti, Giuseppe Patanè, Nello Santi, Gianandrea Gavazzeni, Daniel Oren, Riccardo Chailly, Michel Plasson, Roberto Abbado, Maurizio Arena, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Nicola Rescigno. She has also won acclaim for her performance in Adriana Lecouvreur , Pagliacci, Gianni Schicchi and Manon Lescaut at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan, Madama Butterfly in Vienna, Cologne, Bari, Menorca, Lille, Sao Paulo, and others Theatres in the world. Aida in Madrid, Avance, Singapore, Turin, Melbourne (Festival dei tre Mondi). Tosca in Copenaghen, Toulouse, Hamburg, Vienna, Washington, Palm Beach. Suor Angelica in Bologna, Zanetto in Florence, Sly in Washington, Requiem in Ciudad de Mexico, and in the New Year’s Eve Concert (live on TV USA and Canada) at Lincon Center of New York with Placido Domingo and Zubin Mehta.

As an experienced theatre and opera director, she is sought out as a creative collaborative on various theater projects and production in Italy and abroad.
